Winter

He’s a million miles away. Something is on his mind. Is he rethinking my whole barnacle existence, clamped onto him, trying to stay afloat?

A moment ago, when I asked him what we were, he said nothing.

No-thing.

Just kissed me and turned to the window, staring at the city going by.

Like he hasn’t seen the city a million damn times.

Are we in a relationship? If this isn’t a relationship, what would you call it? I cook for the man every night.

And I like it.

I find myself watching him take that first bite, taking notes of his favorites so I can add them to the rotation. After we eat, all I want to do is curl up next to him on the couch in my coziest sweats and let him cover me in the fuzzy blue blanket—the one he keeps on the back of the sofa just for me—and rub my feet while we pretend to watch movies but all we do is talk about work.

Then, he takes me in his arms, every single night, and carries me up to his bed.

Lately I’ve been thinking of the plush king as our bed. I can’t imagine what his place was like before me. Quiet? Cold? A fridge full of pre-made salads… no good cooking smells filling his kitchen.

We talk and laugh and fuck. The past few weeks have been the best of my life. He smiles. Often. Samantha and Pippa tell me he’s never been more pleasant at work. I deflect their praise, giving credit to the sugar I put in his coffee every morning.

They give the credit to me.

Now he’s on his phone, reserving our tickets. I like the way his brow furrows when he concentrates, his handsome full lips turning downward into a frown. His mouth is like that whenever he’s working on a task, no matter how small.

He takes everything so seriously.

I like that about him.

I’m fun, light, easy. I need someone to anchor me.

“Done.” He slips his phone into the inside pocket of his casual gray jacket, along with mine. My fingers feel itchy, dreaming of my confiscated phone. I’m not some immature young adult, addicted to my screens. It’s just that if I’m not going to figure us out, I want to know what’s happening at work.

Our Beast show is set in a big castle upstate, so of course we dress our participants in the most gorgeous Regency period clothing. I want everything to be perfect. It feels so weird for the costumes to have arrived at the office, and I’m here, miles away.

“You know, if that gold braid is missing, the Beasts just aren’t going to be as handsome as they should be.” I sneak over, slipping my fingers between his jacket and white tee.

He snatches my hand. “Ah, ah, ah,” he says. “No phone.”

“Please? Just one email, one text.” I hear the bing-bong of my notifications and it almost makes me go crazy. I lunge for the phone, trying to break free of his grasp.

Mistake…

One firm grab and tug and he’s got me over his lap, my offending hand pinned against my lower back.
